She almost quit – because of me.

And I felt like a failure.

Years ago, I provided supervision for a BCBA candidate as she worked as an RBT with one of my clients. We worked together with this client for 6 months when there were some major changes in the company that caused the RBT to lose most of her clients.

She had the opportunity to pick up more hours by working with more of my clients, only she told me that she didn’t want to because she didn’t want to work with me more than she already was. She said that I made her uncomfortable.

She would rather be out of work than work with me!

I was blind-sided and had no idea she felt that way. It was a huge blow to my ego at first, but after taking a step back, I recognized it for the learning opportunity that it was. We had a meeting where she explained the 2 encounters we had where I provided corrective feedback. These situations seemed minor to me, especially since we had many more positive interactions from my perspective, but they obviously were important to her. I apologized to her, but she had no interest in restoring our relationship.

It was through this and other humbling  experiences that I learned the importance of building that trusting relationship before jumping in to provide feedback.

The Problem with Feedback during Supervision

You know you have to give your trainees feedback during supervision. But because we’re not trained appropriately to give effective feedback, the reality is bleak:

  • Many trainees are easily offended by corrective feedback.
  • Even those who respond to your feedback often go back to their old habits quickly.
  • Meaning your trainees don’t benefit from their supervision experience.

But that’s not the end of it—the problem’s actually worse than that!

  • You try everything you can to get through to your trainees – including trying the “feedback sandwich” you’ve been told to use.
  • Most trainees miss the point of your feedback and refuse to change what they’re doing.
  • Plus, your trainees’ clients can’t make the progress they could because traditional feedback is generally ineffective.

Traditional feedback methods just don’t work – and your reputation is on the line!

Luckily for you, there’s now a program to help you provide EFFECTIVE feedback during supervision. Introducing The Feedback Sandwich Is Not So Tasty – Using the ACT Matrix to Make Feedback More Delicious:

  • 1 50 minute webinar with actionable steps you can use with trainees right from the start
  • Identify the importance of high-quality supervision
  • Describe the relationship between feedback and high-quality supervision
  • Understand why you should avoid the feedback sandwich
  • Use the ACT matrix as a guide for understanding the motivation of staff and trainees
  • Demonstrate effective feedback strategies during supervision with staff and trainees

But, I’m getting ahead of myself. Hi, my name is Amelia Dalphonse. By now, you’re probably wondering…who am I and how can I make these claims?

  • Like you, I’m a BCBA. I work with autistic children, their families and ABA professionals to help them achieve their highest potential.
  • My passion is helping new professionals in the field avoid many of the pitfalls I experienced early on in my career and I have years of experience helping trainees reach their goals.
  • Because of my own struggles early on when I received supervision, I have invested tons of time experimenting with different tactics to provide the best supervision possible for those entering the field.
  • I took my top tips and strategies and used them to create the RISE Supervision Curriculum.
