Although they require some practice to write effectively, operational definitions are a key component in writing your behavior intervention plan (BIP) or when collecting data about specific behaviors. Operational definitions allow you to convey either what the behavior looks like (topography) or what function the behavior serves while providing sufficient detail to be clear.
